In the Blood
steve coel

You's probably seen my picture in the papers.
Looks bit different now I does.
Big fella then like.
Once done a lot of adverts for tele.

Today things changed.
Can't stick jobs too long.
Nerves shot see.
All started when I was just a kid.
See Dad managed to talk his way
onto shift at Ellington.
So me and Dad and his mates got to spend some time
underground, like they'd been doing in the valleys,
since they was kids.
Laugh it was, cause we's all on holiday
with club at the time.
Mum was furious.

As it goes years just shot by.
But I wasn't laughing my last time down the pit.
Cos after 15 hours digging only came back up
with me best mates arms.
Didn't need me name in papers then.
Trust me.

Extracts from interview[s] for Tin Collector [ 2015 ].

...
I do a lot of urban walking...you pick up
different vibes, nothings fixed.
Sometimes a story can be suggested through a glance,
a street noise, a meeting or a clash
of voices.

...
I'd guess some of the characters in my stories
delight in a darkness., but not all. There
is possibly a sense throughout
that nobody is listening.

...
I write quickly when I grasp an idea, if I spend
too much time then I lose the voice of the
story, it can begin to feel and sound
forced, overdone. It can lose the fizz, the crackle
that starts the whole thing off.

Notes.
steve coel
...
Like so many young men, wise before their years,
they think of the time before the war, beyond pain,
beyond death.Of fields of hay and barley, of hurdling and
shouting and of old men sitting in gales looking into the
distance beyond the hill.

...
Memorials were built and from shallow pockets
coins and notes were found, and erected outside pubs
and parks, market places and banks, needles of granite
still remind people of the guilt and the waste and of young men,
wise before their years torn away from bosom and coalfire.

...
At night secrets shared over beers in grim, tired bars.
Men cling to wood and chair and glass as memories
spill like water through mud and blood.
Finally, too tired to talk, they sit alone staring at walls.
