gate

grey. figures turn; hiding

their hands and run,

as animals scatter 

with the wind 

that howls down the hill 

women gather, 

and men glare

behind vast whiskers.

there are no animals.
no birds, no cats, no foxes.
just desolation, emptiness, conceit.
this is the 'gap'.
some people look at this space and 
see the past.
their past.
others look at this 'gap' 
and imagine the future.

some people are dealing with realities.
while others consider possibilities.

as always. 
the shadow of a man. 
each day up from the sally down the docks into town.
and days spent in the doors of the western and echo

Welcome Back [ Custom House ]

Standing in the doorway to the Custom House you silently mouth a plea for small change. It's not your regular spot today and your recent shave is disappearing. The waterside is busy. You are not. 

Slowly you are becoming invisible and eventually you will disappear leaving only a shadow in each doorway of this street.

walked along this stretch of coast hundreds of times,
to the docks where i photographed the daily ritual 
of the kerbs being painted by elderly welders.
and to the pubs i am still too scared to go in
that echo the empty space between water and youth.
