Notes for micro-flash fiction story [ National Flash - Fiction Day 2014 ].

Journal Notes: 21 June 2000.

11.15

We don't all live in the kingdom of giants like ants in tall grass on hot summer days.
No.
Some of us live in flowers above glistening streams and are happy to fly free.

11.25

And then the shutters close down and the colours disperse. Grey creeps in and encloses the imagination.
Dandelion confetti fills the air as thoughts drift backwards and forwards.
Lying by the quarry pool, the limestone water and the taste of cheap bitter.
The sound of seagulls and the smell of vinegary chips.
Beer on wooden floors.

3.30

Walking alongside a busy road, smelling new cut grass and clearing the mind.
Greys and greens and bits of paper thrown out of car windows litter the bushes. Hidden down secret lanes expensive cars and looked after gardens and trees.
The area is a pallet of colours and extremes. Edges are ill defined, blessed with both innocence and rage.
The scrubby shopping centre nestles close by. Cigarette stubs and chewing gum, swearing and teenage mothers, cheap food and closed toilets.

Illustrations not included.

 Tidal movements

Walking across the field that afternoon the man and his daughter had come across the young man picking mushrooms.

They greeted him simply, commented about the chill, damp day and continued on their walk.

The younger man returned to his now shattered day dreaming while the man and his daughter continued on their way, concluding a queer conversation about the animals they had carefully placed on the opposite side of the valley that morning.

Later that week, in the local newspaper, the man and his daughter spotted a picture of the young man and a short report about his tragic accident at sea.

They smiled at each other with relief, recalling the conversation they’d had with him.  They also spoke briefly and secretly about his sad ending and then continued constructing their models for the valley.

2+2 and 2+2.

Q: Impulsive or spontaneous?

A: Er...both. Write with you ears.
I'd add improvisation too actually.
When I get the idea for a story I usually write quickly. Catch the moment.
Most short story writers I know, and like, tell me they do the same.
Spontaneity with no regrets?
I wish!

Q: Are we looking for messages?
A: No. I'd probably settle for witty observations.

Briefly?
O.K.

So...learned skills on my first
3-5 in nasty Clink Hotel
up North.
Was probably busiest
when stoneheads
took over operations
down south.
Word got round.
Useful skills mine.
Well; used to be.
Could always,
and I mean always,
keep my mouth shut
and get job done.
And when I's outside?
I got protected.
Which was useful.
And next time
I got banged up
I could soon pick up
where I left off.
Best message man and tillman
there was.
Period.
Those days
long over now though.

That enough for you?
