space round the back [ notes ]
steve coel

there are no animals.
no birds, no cats, no foxes.
just desolation, emptiness, conceit.
this is the 'gap'.
some people look at this space and
see the past.
their past.
others look at this 'gap'
and imagine the future.

some people are dealing with realities.
while others consider possibilities.

strange times on the De / City Tour.
seeing this all over.

Welcome Back [ Custom House ]
steve coel

Standing in the doorway to the Custom House you silently mouth a plea for small change. It's not your regular spot today and your recent shave is disappearing. The waterside is busy. You are not.
Slowly you are becoming invisible and eventually you will disappear leaving only a shadow in each doorway of this street.

walked along this stretch of coast hundreds of times,
to the docks where i photographed the daily ritual
of the kerbs being painted by elderly welders.
and to the pubs i am still too scared to go in
that echo the empty space between water and youth.

i can remember rooms full of elderly people
whose feet didn't reach the ground when seated.
hard times. hard people. hard lives lived.

saw it again recently. one difference.
younger people.
there are, everyday reminders of what is
rapidly being replaced.
the landscape of memory is being smashed,
not just threatened.

old photographs should be exactly that.
some things, so we are told, are best forgotten.

rains on me
steve coel

innocence doesn't exist here.
not even for the young.
only dead eyes stare from photographs
taken by drunk uncles.

short goodbyes to forgotten lovers
are etched into shop front, dockside
and idle backyard gossip.

Eight Rooms

Eight Rooms
[ the confession trade]
'...get good at anything and you will create
your own enemies.'
[ bukowski ]

extract[s].
thing you learns, my uncle told me, is that most folk will
tell you the things you needs to know.
trick is to know how to get the right information quick.
uncle who taught us said that it's just a simple matter
of gentle persuasion.rely on your rooms to get the right
results, he said.
...this morning. only needed a plank of wood with a couple
of nails and a clasp knife, and it's funny how fishing line, carefully knotted, works too. eight rooms minimum is
the best number of rooms to have in this business.
we knows that. used to be a trade secret.
trusted we are.so we gets plenty of work.
want to find out whose been busy lately?
bottle of whisky, a betting shop pen and padlock usually
does the trick.
first time round.
where's the money gone?
cosy sofa, glass coffee table, bit of fake blood on the
carpet, garden fork leaning on a chair...trust me.
see reputation is everything in this game.
if you hears someone gone missing or someone gone back
home just spread the word. hint at reasons.
make it a bad one. job done. easy.
things can get difficult. a lie if you hears different
because some people do try it on. thats how you learns
to select right room.
all you needs to succeed in this game is a fucking good
sense of fen shui and an ability to disguise yourself like.
stands to reason pays good. hours can be shit. but, if you
continues to get result they say you can retire young.
move on. go live in ibiza or the canaries or some place.
it's my family business at the moment.
just a job really.

me? i like to walk.
i like listening to places.

[ interview: American Audio Prose Library, Missouri, 1985 ]

wave goodbye to the good times
...she noticed the writing when quickly dropping from
view to hide from her minder. he was still busy looking
for her and she didn't fancy getting beaten up again so
soon after the last time.
evil man, evil temper, bad habits.
but not even street minders come in this place.
not here.
owner, seeing it all, simply placed her own drink
on the table.
...watching her calmly go outside and have a quiet
word with her minder, she could tell straight away who
was more powerful.
she watched them shake hands.
tonight.
...she looked out to the empty dark street and once
more at the words, by the door, written in her own
language.

i watch you

throw your legs

out of the car

on the passenger side

on to the sidewalk.

straight into the path

of the local blind beggar

i watch you

kick away his stick

steal his money

and dig

your knife

in deep.

i watch you

step back into your car

and drive away

someone will always tell you,

Cadillac Heart

performed this week.

mainly pieces from cadillac heart [ 1986 - 1996 ].

just because.

sounded quite topical even out of my, by now, older mind.

i'm thinking of re-recording many of my previous works.

cadillac heart might just be one of them.

extracts [ lyrics, spoken word ] - selected at random.

His stick tip-tapping down the platform, sympathy and shock

the crowd parting. a bleak groan from a grown man

across the park, as fire cracks it's evil flicker.

pavements glisten, perspiring after another days

heavy abuse...

a drunken shoe, ghosts dormant in a

world gone crazy.

nightlife shovelled gleefully into

demanding hands...

gypsy souls drinking thimbles of wine

and scuffles down the street...

cherry hearts and shattered love

drinking whiskey from broken cups

in unlit rooms

newspaper on feet

keeping cold out and infected mind in...

a closely cropped wild beard

borders your face

and your eyes sing

of lost love and addiction...

next day you are dead

burned alive

in bushes

by children

and all that remains

are your words
